King George Weekend

Whilst Royal Ascot is the premier summer event at the Ascot racecourse, the most prestigious horserace is the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which is held in July as part of a more compact event called the King George Weekend.

Here we take a look at last year’s event, as well as results from years before (where relevant).

Race Results

The John Guest Racing EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes

This class 5 race was the opener of the event; it was run on a turf surface over a distance of 7 furlongs. The French filly Destiny Queen won the race at odds of 28/1, upsetting the favourites Ephrata at 5/2, Pulcheria at 11/4 and Zestful at 9/2. In previous years, fillies with shorter odds have won it: Zabeel Queen in 2020 at odds 5/1, Cloak Of Spirits in 2019 at odds 3/1, and Ceratonia in 2018 at odds 5/4.

The Anders Foundation British EBF Crocker Bulteel Maiden Stakes

Ehraz, the favourite at 4/9, won the race, followed by Irish colt Buoyant at 4/1, and French colt Ideal Guest at 50/1. 11 horses ran over a distance of 6 furlongs on a turf track. Statistics from previous years show the favourites normally win this race: Mohawk King won the race in 2020 at odds 6/1, Mums Tipple won in 2019 at odds 5/1, and Production won in 2018 at odds 9/4.

The John Guest Racing Brown Jack Handicap Stakes

This handicap stakes is a class 3 race that is run over a longer distance: 1 mile 7 furlongs and 209 yards and is open to horses aged three years and above. Last year there were 8 runners, and the race was won by French gelding Speedo Boy, who won it for the second time, at odds 8/1. Star Caliber came in second at odds 6/4, and Single came in third at odds 11/1. In 2020, Table Mountain won the race at odds 9/2, in 2019 Thmaxwecan won the race at 2/1, and in 2018 Speedo Boy won the race at odds 3/1.

The British Racecourses Join Sunflower Lanyard Scheme Valiant Stakes

This was the first class 1 race, and it was contested by 7 runners who ran over a distance of 7 furlongs and 213 yards. Irish mare Dreamloper won the race at odds 13/2, followed by Light On at odds 11/4. The race was won in 2020 by Lady Bowthorpe at odds 12/1, in 2019 by Duneflower at odds 11/1, and in 2018 by Clon Coulis at odds 4/1.

The John Guest Racing Handicap Stakes

This long distance race is run over 1 mile 3 furlongs and 211 yards. In last year's edition, 10 runners took part, of whom Alfred Boucher won at odds 11/2. In second, Grand Bazaar placed at 11/4, followed by Labeebb at odds 9/2. In the years preceding the 2021 race, Jeremiah won at odds 8/1, Sextant won at odds 5/4, and Kelly’s Dino won at odds 9/1.

The Rotary Club of Ascot Handicap Stakes

This is a class 2 race that was run over the short distance of 5 furlongs. Of the 6 runners, Mountain Peak won the race at odds 7/1, followed by Bedford Flyer at odds 9/2. They both came ahead of the favourite, Jamwwaal who was given odds of 4/1. In 2020, the second from last longshot, Tone The Barone won the race, with odds of 18/1.

The Berenberg October Club Supporting Cares Family Fillies’ Handicap Stakes

The last race on the first day, this is a class 4 race that is run over 5 furlongs. Last year, the race was won by Havagomecca at odds 13/2 and Amor De Mi Vida placed in second at odds of 17/2. The two horses had the longest odds amongst their competition. In 2020, Rose Hip won the competition at odds 2/1, in 2019, Texting won the competition at odds 13/8, and in 2018 Procedure won the race at odds 4/1.

The Pat Eddery Stakes

The Pat Eddery Stakes are a listed class 1 race, and the first race of the second day. Last year, 6 runners ran over a distance of 7 furlongs. New Science, the heavy favourite, won the race at odds 2/1, whilst Angel Bleu placed in second at odds 4/1. In 2020, Chindit won the race at odds 15/2, in 2019, Al Dabaran won the race at odds 11/4, and in 2018, Victory Command won the race at odds 9/2.

The Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes

This is a class 1 race open to fillies. It is run over a sprint distance of 6 furlongs, and last year there were 10 runners. Irish filly Zain Claudette won the race at odds 15/2, with Desert Dreamer coming second at odds 9/4, and Delmona coming in third at odds 11/1. In 2020, Santosha won the race at odds 5/1, in 2019, Under The Stars won the race at odds 25/1, and in 2018 Angel’s Hideaway won the race at odds 11/4.

The Porsche Handicap Stakes

This is a 1 mile race that is open to colts and geldings aged 3 years old. Last year, Guru won the race at odds 7/2, with Marsabit coming in second at odds 13/2. Before that, Tsar won the race at odds 9/4 in 2020, Flashcard won the race at odds 3/1 in 2019, and Crack On Crack On won the race at odds 9/2 in 2018.

The Moet & Chandon International Stakes

This is a class 2 race named after one of the key sponsors, French wine and champagne producer Moet & Chandon. The race was run last year between 19 contestants over 7 furlongs, and Irish gelding Danyah won the race at odds 9/2. Star Of Orion came in second at odds 15/2, Dance Fever came third at odds 12/1, and Cliffs Of Capri came in fourth at odds 20/1. In the previous editions of the race, Blue Mist won at odds 9/2 in 2020, Raising Sand won the race at odds 7/1 in 2019, and Burnt Sugar won the race at odds 20/1 in 2018.

The King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes

This is the marquee race of the event; it is a group 1 race run over a distance of 1 mile, 3 furlongs and 211 yards. Of the 5 runners in last year’s race, Adayar won at odds 9/4, with Mishriff coming in second at odds 13/2. Before that, Enable won the race in 2020 and 2019, coming in at odds 4/9 and 8/15, respectively. Before him, Poet’s Word won the race in 2018 at odds 7/4.

The Sebastian’s Action Trust Stakes

This race is run over the same distance as the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Last year, there were four runners in the race. Southern Voyage, a French Colt who was the heavy favourite, won the race at odds 2/1. Previously, Look Closely won the race in 2020 at odds 7/1, Western Duke won in 2019 at odds 14/1, and Koeman won in 2018 at odds 10/1.

The Longines Handicap Stakes

The very last race of the event is exclusively for female amateur jockeys. It can be difficult to research because the jockeys and horses are lesser known. The race is run over a distance of 7 furlongs, and last year there were 7 contestants. Spirited Guest won the race at odds 10/3, with Hajjam coming in second at odds 20/1, and Zlatan in third at odds 11/2.

King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes Summary

The highlight of the King George Weekend is always the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and last year Adayar brought trainer Charlie Appleby his first win at the race. William Buick, the jockey who rode the race winning horse, added a second win at the esteemed race, after having previously won it in 2011. In 2020, Enable, a British bay mare, won her third King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes adding to her wins in 2017 and 2019. She was jockeyed by Frankie Dettori and trained by Aidan O'Brien. O'Brien frequently enters horses he has trained into the race, and has won it 4 times before, though his last win came in 2016 with Irish racehorse Highland Reel.
